Fine, I’ll admit it. I’m using Instagram and actually enjoying it. I have a non-iPhone, so just downloaded the new app recently. Aside from the filters which I find alternately annoying and interesting, it’s a great way to quickly share photos and I enjoy snapping photos while I’m working in my sewing room. It’s making me think about process more and see the beauty in it. If you want to follow me on Instagram, my username is thelongthread. The images above are things I’m working on with my new Quilt Blocks fabric, a project for my book and a Liberty dress that I’m working on for my daughter. Shirring done, now it needs to be sewn together. I’ll continue to share process photos. It’s so much faster to snap and share this way.
Quilt Blocks Shop Challenge
Attention handmade shop owners: I have a challenge for you! I’d love to see what you make from my new Quilt Blocks collection for Moda, so I am proposing a challenge. You are eligible for this challenge if you have an online shop, a local handmade shop, or if you sell locally at craft fairs. Here are the simple rules:
1) Make something with my Quilt Blocks fabric for your shop. It can incorporate any of the prints, alone or combined with solids.
2) Post a photo to the Quilt Blocks Flickr group here and add the tag “QuiltBlocksShopChallenge”.
I will pick my three favorites and each handmade artist will be featured on The Long Thread with a dedicated post profiling the shop owner and the shop. You will also receive three months of free advertising over there in the sidebar. PLUS five yards of Quilt Blocks fabric! So get started making stuff!
I’ll be accepting entries through the end of May. Can’t wait to see what you make! And those of you who make things for fun and don’t have a shop, I want to see your creations too. Be sure to add your photos to the Flickr photo pool as well. Thanks!
Here’s a post with the list of fabric shops carrying the fabric. I know that the Fat Quarter Shop has it in stock and ready to ship!
Flying Geese Coasters
When I was designing the Quilt Blocks collection, I really wanted to make fabrics that you could use for all kinds of projects, not just quilting. I think the best thing about the fabrics is that they really don’t need to be cut up and sewn together to make geometric patterns, but here I’ve taken the flying geese fabric design and cut it up anyway! These coasters are patchwork, made from all three colorways of this pattern, which I called “Flying Stripe”, inspired by flying geese and a ticking stripe.
These are pretty similar to the Pieced Coasters that I made here. Just cut into 1″ strips with a ruler. You can read more details and see process photos over at Stumbles and Stitches. They are featuring some great projects in their Feather Your Nest series, as well as organizing ideas and peeks into the homes of creative people.
