Bamboo Purse

bamboo-purse

It’s spring, so I am again making bags with bamboo handles.  I loved this one that I made last summer which took a lot of abuse, so I made another one last night with Anna Maria Horner fabric from the Drawing Room collection.

I think the heavier weight will stand up better and it is lined with a heavy duty canvas.  There is a good tutorial here for a similar bag, but since I lined this bag I pretty much followed the basic construction from this bag, but added two rows of stitching on the outside of the opening.  You still can’t avoid hand sewing the bag to the handles (ugh) but the whole thing came together in an hour or two.  Sorry for the poor photo, but we’ve seen some rainy days here in Atlanta — which we desperately needed!

Make a String Bikini for Barbie!

barbie-bikini

Are you tired of your modest Barbie?  Never lying around the house naked or wearing provocative, cheaply made clothing?  Make her a skimpy string bikini — the kids will love it!  Maybe she can even earn some extra cash.  And if your young children aren’t already insecure about living up to Barbie’s ludicrous standard of beauty, they can still look forward to feelings of inadequacy in their teenage years!  Hurray!

Supplies:

-string

-heavy duty staple gun

-methamphetamines

Step 1: Staple string to Barbie’s back, using 100 or more staples.  Careful, she’s a slippery gal!

Step 2: Take methamphetamines and watch HGTV.

All done!

Needle Felted Eggs

needle-felted-eggs

Made some needle felted eggs last week.  I’m hoping to make a yarn nest to go with them, but we’ll see how the week goes.  These would also be nice in different colors hanging from a flowering branch.  Don’t feel like making these?  Buy some here or here.  And I love, love this tutorial for some fancy felt eggs.

Whoopie Pies

I was looking for a decadent dessert to serve to runners post-marathon (my husband’s TWELFTH marathon).  So I decided to make whoopie pies.  Then I saw this article in the New York Times.

I was excited to learn that Marshmallow Fluff is vegetarian since my children are denied marshmallows, but it has some pretty unhealthy ingredients so I couldn’t bring myself to buy the large jar.  Instead, I used a small jar and substituted with butter.  You could accomplish the same thing with egg whites, but it always makes me nervous to put egg whites in icing.  The pies were just about like a messy cake with oozy icing in the center, but they were good and the kids definitely enjoyed them.
