Make it Monday!

I’m adding a new feature to the blog called Make it Monday. I’ll be offering free craft and sewing patterns every other Monday (maybe every week, but I’m not promising). This week I’m posting a pattern for my Superhero Cape. This can be made with the fabrics of your choice and used for a superhero, princess, magician, sorcerer, or anything else you can imagine. The cape is lined with a contrasting fabric, appliquéd with a design, and fastened by Velcro so the wee ones can take care of themselves. I used matte satin and a shiny cotton print for this cape. It seems to fit sizes 2-6, but is easily adjustable. It was tough to get a good picture of the cape because Supergirl is always on the run!

Below is the pattern file and the shape templates. I have included a star, lightning bolt, crown and heart. If anyone makes this I would love to see some pictures. I have set up a flickr group here.

  6. Yeah! I just finished (in our case) a magician cape for my little guy. It looks fantastic. I used black satin with littled glittery stars on it and the same dotted fabric you have in your pictures but in turquoise. It has a wonderful weight to it, not at all flimsy like the ones in the stores. A quick after-the-kids-are-in-bed project.

  12. Hi, I have been looking for a cape pattern for my Grandaughter who is turning 5 this month. I don’t sew, so I will be hiring someone to make it. I love yours, the finished product is beautiful and a much higher quality than others I have found online. I have a question, she is tall for her age & I want the cape to last several years. How much fabric would you suggest to make one that fits 6x-10? (she wears a 6-6x right now) Also, any suggestions on what the measurement allowances show now be? Thank you so much. Lorie

  13. Thanks for the easy to sew instructions! I have a little princess who I thought would look so adorable with a cape for Halloween. I’m not much of a sewer and this was so simple and easy I finished it in under one hour!

    I made my son’s a little bit longer and in black(think star wars) he was so thrilled with his cape/new wardrobe, and
    again the pattern was so easy to add too. I will definitely be making a few more capes in different colours.

    *Lorie just measure from her neck down to where you think the cape should end, whoever is sewing the cape can easily modify the length from there.

  18. Thank you for this great pattern. I am only a novice sewer, but made it easily using your original instructions, and then felt brave enough to modify it slightly to make a second one.

  19. Okay, seriously…I just made 6 of the cutest capes I’ve ever seen! This is a great pattern. Excluding the trip to the fabric department it’s a 30 minute job! We have fur ‘cuffs’ at the bottom edge for the girls, a Super Hero for one of the boys and a Magicians Cape complete with hidden pockets for the other dude.

  22. Thanks for posting these instructions!! This was my first ever sewing project. I have never even used a sewing machine. Your instructions were great!! My daughter loves her cape!! I think i did okay for the first time. I want to try another one now that I know what I am doing.

  23. Thanks for posting these instructions, I am looking forward to trying this cape. I was wondering if you could clarify the fusible webbing for me? When you say fusible webbing are you talking about the one that fuses on both sides or the one that fuses on one side only? And if it is the one sided one, should I use light, medium or heavy thickness?

  24. I made 15 capes for a grandaughter’s super hero 5th birthday party. I found a polyester fabric with shiny metallic on one side and black on the other. I used only that layer of fabric, and the fabric didn’t ravel so I didn’t have to hem it. Not as elegant as a lined cape but very quick and easy for a party costume and favor. The fabric was on sale and so the capes cost just $2.25 each.

  25. Thank you so much for posting these patterns. I made 9 “no-sew” versions of these using pinking shears and no sew tacking tape. The only sewing I had to do was to attach velcro tabs to the collar. Kids loved them!

  32. Thanks so much for a great tutorial. I make it the same as above but added applique to both sides making it reversible. One side with her initial and two lightning bolts and the other with a crown. Superhero or princess. Also made a felt mask for the superhero side and a few months ago I made a felt crown- I really hope she loves it.

  37. Love this! I made two over the past few days – one for my daughter and one for her friend as Christmas gifts. Kathy – the neck is large enough for an adult so I think it would mostly be lengthening the cape a bit. You could still use the top part of the pattern, and the bottom – the main thing to change would be the length – instead of 30″ maybe 45.” It’s pretty easy to do – and I am NO expert!!

  38. Thank you soooooo much for your generosity in sharing such an easy pattern. I finished my daughters (4yo) tonight and I’ll finish my son’s (2yo) tomorrow. I put the applique on both sides so it is fully reversible. Capes look AWESOME…heaps better than anything available in the shops and little miss super hero has already been zooming around telling me that she’ll be the best dressed superhero at the birthday party she is going to next week.     We have two nephews and one niece who will be superheroes come Christmas this year. Going down to the Goodwill outlet to find shiny dresses to remake as capes…will post as creation is complete. 🙂

  41. Thanks! I’m feeling like a superhero right now, after making two superhero capes for my playgroup Secret Santa thing, where we were required to think of great gifts under $10. I’m going to make at least two more capes tomorrow, for my own daughter & her best friend. The most dangerous thing about this template is that I am now tempted to make capes for everyone on my Christmas list.

  43. Thanks for rescuing me from a Christmas fix! My grandson wanted blue superhero capes for himself, his sister and two big dogs. I needed a pattern that was safe and strangle-proof and you provided it for me. The excess from the cutting made perfectly nice dog capes as well.

I had help from my mom, but the pattern is so easy to work with that it was a real breeze to sew up so many. Thanks!!

  46. Thank You for posting this!! I’ve been hard at work and have Finally completed my 5th cape in just over a month. I had not used a sewing machine since my 4-H days and had to borrow my mom’s machine. I posted about it on our site… the kids love them!!

  48. Thanks so much for this pattern. My 3 year old daughter had an early Royal Wedding party to go to and only her sister’s outgrown and rather tired outfit to wear. I found this pattern at 10am and by 12pm she was wearing her new princess cape with applique heart. This was only the third thing I’ve made on a sewing machine but the pattern was so clear that even a beginner like me could manage it. The finished product looks fantastic! Now I’m itching to see what else I can make

  49. Oh I’m so THRILLED to have seen this post on the Janome site. I’m making capes this weekend for my two and three year old for easter. I had the logos figured out but was having a bit of trouble logistically figuring out the whole cape. Thank you SO much! I’ll post a pic when they’re done.

  50. Embarrassed to say that I am making a cape for myself…costume party!!! How would I adjust for adult measurements? help!!!
