I’m adding a new feature to the blog called Make it Monday. I’ll be offering free craft and sewing patterns every other Monday (maybe every week, but I’m not promising). This week I’m posting a pattern for my Superhero Cape. This can be made with the fabrics of your choice and used for a superhero, princess, magician, sorcerer, or anything else you can imagine. The cape is lined with a contrasting fabric, appliquéd with a design, and fastened by Velcro so the wee ones can take care of themselves. I used matte satin and a shiny cotton print for this cape. It seems to fit sizes 2-6, but is easily adjustable. It was tough to get a good picture of the cape because Supergirl is always on the run!
Below is the pattern file and the shape templates. I have included a star, lightning bolt, crown and heart. If anyone makes this I would love to see some pictures. I have set up a flickr group here.

I have been searching the web to find a great cape to make for my son’s 5th birthday. He wanted a transformers theme but we are doing a fire truck ride (we won at an auction) so I wanted to work the hero angle. I think these will make great favors! Beautiful…and thank you…have been searching all evening for a quality cape pattern, my 8 and 6 year olds have discovered Harry Potter and I’m planning to make them some Harry Potter capes with Griffindor badges (sew on ones I’ve found on Amazon!!) as a Christmas gift. Do I just need to add length to fit their sizes? Will post pics to let you know how i get on 🙂
I was looking for a superman cape pattern to make a cape for my son’s dachshund/chihuahua mix. He is doing a great job of keeping the peacocks out of the yard as well as the cat “burglars”. so as a joke I’m making Shelby his own superhero cape. I found your pattern and it looked easy enough to adjust to his size. Thanks

Thank you for this easy pattern! I hate to be the only person needing help, but I must have used to thin of material, as I’m having issues with the collar staying folded down. I think I can just redo the velcro and make some minor changes? Anyone else have this issue? Anyway, my granddaughter & grandson LOVE this cape and I’m sure I’ll have issues getting the capes away from them so I can adjust the collar!! I had six superhero capes to make for grandchildren for Christmas, and I used your instructions. The instructions were accurate, easy, and the capes were gorgeous. The children were so excited with them, and dashed around the house in them for hours! Thank you so much.

I made this cape today in a beautiful raspberry satin for my superhero princess. I love the pattern. There is one thing I will do differently next time, however. Instead of the velcro at the collar, I would put a button and elastic. The velcro on our cape has a tendency to come apart during active superhero play! That’s all. Thank you so much!

On Monday night my son said he wanted a Superman cape. On Tuesday we purchased the material. On Tuesday night, in less than 2 hours we had a cape! Thank you so very much for your tutorial!!!

I made some dressing up capes for my nephews party this coming weekend based on your pattern. A shortage of fabric and a lucky find of some really wide ribbon I could use to make the collar meant that they aren’t exactly following your pattern, but they came out really well. Your design was easy to draw out on paper and even easier to sew (thank goodness, 12 capes in one evening plus an hour the next morning to attach the velcro).

Wow! I am thrilled with this. We got a magician’s set for my daughter’s friend and we thought we’d complement it with a magician’s cape. I looked at the fabrics I had, and I had just enough of the main one. It came out gorgeous. I ended up not sewing the Velcro because it was the one with the sticky backing and was not sure what it would do the needle.

Hello. I am making capes for our vampire family Halloween costumes. My daughter’s turned out great! Now I am ready to make one for myself and husband. Can you please share how to alter the pattern? I’m not sure how to alter the collar. Thank you! The cape is perfect!

Hi! Don’t worry the capes on Zulily.com are not from this pattern. Little Hero Capes is the company that makes them and have been in business since 2007. The pattern is original to the owner.
I cannot wait to make these for my preschool students to add to our dramatic play area. Will be making the crowns too.
