Quilt Texture

texture

I’ve been thinking a lot about creating texture in quilts. I find that when I experiment with one element, it’s helpful to remove all other visual ideas. So I’ve been working in all white just thinking about lines and texture. After working on this piece, I decided that the back is much more interesting than the front, which is leading me on to new techniques. It’s exciting to experiment with different ideas and I’m pushing myself beyond my comfort zone this year with a few new projects. More on that soon.

Experiments in Black + White

b+w-papercut

Papercut in black and white.

Lately I’ve been experimenting with different media, starting without color. Now I design all of my fabric collections in black and white before adding color, which allows me to focus on line and form, before clouding everything with color. And sometimes it doesn’t need color at all. If you have followed my fabric designs for a while, you may have noticed that I like to keep things simple.

I went years only wanting to make and sew functional objects, but now I just want to explore techniques. At this point, I don’t want to write instructions or draft patterns, but I’m not sure where I’m going with this.
