Vintage Things

Right now I’m working on a project using vintage sheets, like these Vera Neumann sheets pictured above, so I had vintage fabric on my mind over the weekend. And I’ve been reading some of my childhood books and remembering how much I love them! I thought I’d share a few things.

Pictured above is a snowball quilt that I bought on ebay for not much at all. The fabrics are amazing and the entire quilt top is hand pieced. When I got it in the mail, it reeked of smoke and was yellowed. So I soaked it in the tub (which resulted in nicotine-colored water) and it’s back to white again with no odor. It’s on my someday list of projects to make it into a quilt. Love this snowball design.

Also, I ordered some things from this Etsy shop, and the owner sent me a few extra vintage goodies. Like these patchwork stars, pictured above. Perhaps the best part about them is the paper backing, which appears to be some type of farm newspaper. It’s nice to see this snapshot of someone’s life and time. Maybe my half-finished projects will be passed along one day to someone who can make something from them! They are certainly stacking up.

I’ve also been reading one of my favorite childhood books to my kids, The Fourteen Bears in Summer and Winter by Evelyn Scott (still available used, but expensive). I loved this book as a child, which you can tell from the crayon marks and torn pages. It’s the story of a bear family during the seasons. As my daughter pointed out, the bears are all girls (except for the father and the baby) and each girl bear has her own tree house with its own style of decor. I loved looking at the houses and thinking about which house I loved the most. I loved the whimsical painted furniture of the Dutch-style house, the clean lines of the modern house, and the cozy draped beds of the fancy houses. Looking at it now, I realize that I’ve never been able to settle on just one style! I always fight with myself about the materialistic nature of loving design, but I still do love pretty things. I’ll blame this book.

And another book that I had as a child and recently ordered used is the book pictured below, Tony the Magic Ponywritten by C. Parma and illustrated by J. Sengler. Not only is the main character’s name Ellen, but the book has unique and charming illustrations. The little girl lives on a small island, but wishes for a magical pony, who helps her rope another island and make more space. I loved everything about this book.

I really do think the illustrations in our children’s books are important to helping our kids appreciate art. I had no idea how much I was connected to my childhood books until I had children of my own and started reading the books of my childhood. Like these here and here that I’ve blogged about in the past.

Where I Sew Month

Kathy at Pink Chalk Fabrics is featuring sewing spaces on her blog all month long. She’s also giving away 50 gift certificates of $20 each! And you can add photos of your own sewing space to the photo pool. I love to see how people organize and decorate their creative space, whether it’s a dedicated room or the dining room table.

You can see a photo of my sewing space over there, but if you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you will know that there is a giant pile of fabric on my sewing room floor, that has now become the dog’s bed. I have grand plans to get some new storage units this weekend. I’m thinking some Billy shelves from IKEA with doors at the bottom. I keep trying open storage, but sometimes you just need to hide the mess.

Quilt Blocks Shop Challenge Winner #3

Another winner of the Quilt Blocks Shop Challenge is Jenny Bartoy, who you may know from her blog Stumbles & Stitches, which she writes along with her friend Angel. Jenny has made some really great things with my Quilt Blocks fabric. I love her use of the fabric with linen, of course. And the stars and flying geese designs are just perfect with this fabric.

Here’s Jenny to tell you more about how she got started sewing and opened her Etsy shop:

Thank you so much, Ellen!  I design fabric art and handmade items that I sell in my shop on Etsy.  Inspired by nature, patchwork and clean design, I love to work with linen, burlap, felt and modern fabrics.  I stock my shop with artwork, housewares and accessories as inspiration strikes — usually combining natural linen and bold designer prints for a result that is both modern and earthy.

I grew up seeing my mother sewing, constantly and fearlessly.  My mom taught me the basics when I was young and bought me a sewing machine when I got married.  When my first baby was born, I began sewing regularly, preferring to experiment with my own designs over following patterns.  Two years ago, I launched the blog Stumbles & Stitches with my dear friend Angel to share our projects with each other (and with the world!). Last fall, I opened my business on Etsy and have enjoyed it very much so far.

I grew up in France and moved to Austin, Texas as a teenager.  I have lived all over the United States and hold degrees in Film and Social Cultural Anthropology.  Some day, I’d like to make documentary films!  Alternately, I wouldn’t mind backpacking around the world with my family or living on a farm in the country surrounded by chickens and fruit trees.  I currently live in beautiful Seattle, WA with my archaeologist husband, our two sons and one rambunctious kitty.

Head over to her shop and pick up some of these Quilt Blocks pillows before they’re gone!

Quilt Blocks Shop Challenge Winner #1

Last month, I posted a challenge for handmade shop owners using my Quilt Blocks fabric. Today, I’m featuring one of the three winners (in no particular order). Cheryl from Will Sew for Chocolate made the pillow and quilt that you see above. I love how bright and cheerful this looks. Here’s a bit from Cheryl about how she started her shop, along with some photos of her work:

Lucky me! Creativity has surrounded me all of my life. Mom gave me the talent for working with fabric and thread. Dad was a professional draftsman who gave me a talent for sketching and painting. My sister Kay shares my love of sewing and quilting. My four other sibs (all sisters) sewed once upon a time, but now focus their creativity into creating beautiful homes and gardens. My daughter Nicole doesn’t currently share my love of a sewing machine; she prefers to decorate her apartment, paint, and create adorable greeting cards. I’m confident she has the sewing and quilting gene somewhere inside her just waiting to get out!

I currently sew colorful quilts, pillows and whatever suits my fancy, for my new etsy shop “WillSewForChocolate”. I can hardly believe that only 1 year ago a friend told me I should sell my creations on etsy… and my response was “What’s etsy?”! After some research, I opened my etsy shop in December 2011 and now have quilts that have gone to live in Florida, Connecticut and Guam. How cool is that!

In my free time, I have fun creating girly, glam dresses for my little niece Lily in my “Chocolate Factory” (a.k.a. my sewing room). When I’m not working with fabric, I’m building flower and vegie gardens in my yard and unintentionally sharing them with the rabbits and chipmunks that live here in sunny Madison, Wisconsin.

Designer’s Dozen at Sew, Mama, Sew!

I was talking with Kristin of Sew, Mama, Sew! at Quilt Market and mentioned that I’d love to do a fat quarter selection on her blog. If you’ve been reading Sew, Mama, Sew! for a while now, you may remember the guest packs selected by Amy Karol, Rashida Coleman-Hale, and Alicia Paulson. It’s like a stroll down fabric memory lane, isn’t it? Kristin agreed to let me pick out some fabrics and even sent me my own pack!

I’ve already cut into these to use for a project in 1, 2, 3 Quilt. This color combination is one that I’ve been using a lot of lately, as I love mixing different shades of one color — here mostly greens and blues. Plus I added some of my favorite mustard yellow with pops of orange. Of course I included one of my prints, but I also have Lizzy House, Melody Miller, Lucie Summers, and Denyse Schmidt represented here, among others. So, head over to Sew, Mama, Sew! and pick up a pack before they run out!
