Ottoman Schmottoman

I hate this ottoman.  I am in a period of crafrustration where none of my projects come out right, which is one reason that I’ve not posted the past few days.  For this project, I used a cheaper blend version of sari fabrics, as silk obviously would not work for a project like this and would be too expensive.  Still, the fabric was slippery and had to be backed with fusible webbing.  Here’s the before and after shot of the ottoman, so I suppose it’s an improvement:

But in a house with two small children this is not the best fabric choice and it came out a bit sloppy.  You should see the matching chair that I energetically ripped apart but have now decided that I am not capable of recovering.  Oops.   At least I bought upholstery fabric for that project.  Do you ever start to hate something in your house so much that you must change it right away?  That’s how I felt about this chair and ottoman.  And I’ll probably feel compelled to change this again soon.  Persistence, right?

Enough of my complaining.  I still think that sari fabric would make some lovely pillows, and I like these colors.  I used the wrong side of the fabric as it had a little less sheen and more muted color tones.

  1. Your new Ottoman cover looks very Bollywood! I love the colours and the sheen from using silk. Who cares if it is practical! At least you will have a good excuse to recover when that one has become well loved.

  2. I like the re-do of the ottoman. I see your concern about the fabric with two young kids around. Look at it this way, now you know how to recover your ottoman so enjoy this look for now Once the kids spill on it choose new fabric and get a whole new look for your ottoman. It can be the ever changing ottoman!

  3. This is so cute! I would have never thought of using patchwork on upholstery, but this looks so great! I need to find something in my house to try this on!

  4. I love it. I need to make new covers for my ottomans (again.) The kids just thrash them. I hope your kids don’t thrash yours for at least a little while. Dang kids.

  5. I think it’s lovely and anyone who looks too close and finds mistakes is too snotty to be invited into your home! However, I ‘get it’ about little kids. Hey, my youngest is 17 and he dropped a container of icing (the kind you use to dip cinnamon sticks) on a couch. It was an old hand-me-down in the playroom that no one sees anyway, but still…

  6. I know your post is from last year but I found it while searching for options to slipcover an ottoman. Mine looks very similar to your “before” photo. Did you dismantle the old one or just slip the new cover over everything and anchor at the bottom? I think its lovely. Thanks for the help.

  7. I removed the fabric from the old ottoman and made a slipcover. I have actually re-covered it since then because I got tired of the sari fabric. The second time I didn’t even bother to staple it to the underside.

  8. Thanks for the answer. I love your site. Just getting back into some sewing after many years!
