Fabric Covered Table

sewing-room5

A few of you asked about the children’s table in my sewing room that was featured over on Craft. I recently painted the table and covered it in fabric. No one likes to put together IKEA furniture, but the benefit of this table was that I was able to take it apart to attach the fabric. For $40 plus some fabric and paint, I think it turned out to be a pretty cute table and chairs.

We had been using this table for a while and it was painted pink, but became covered in paint, glitter and glue. So I removed the table top, laid it out on the fabric, cut the fabric about 2″ wider than the table on all sides and stapled it to the underside. Now we’ll try to use this table mostly for drawing and sewing, but I’m sure one day we’ll manage to spill glue or paint on it, so then we can simply remove the fabric and replace it or paint the table again. I used some IKEA fabric leftover from our bathroom shades, and at $6 per yard I’m not too worried about ruining it. You could also try an oilcloth or polyurethane-coated cotton to withstand spills.

Oh, and the drawings on the table are from Erin McCamant, the budding talent who is helping me test patterns for the book. Thank you, Erin! My girls are enjoying playing fashionista with her designs.

  1. What a fantastic idea! Love it. We have that table and have done so for about 10 years so it could definitely do with a pretty facelift!

  2. So cute!! I loved your tour!! I’ve been reading your amazing blog for quite a while now, and I am so excited about your book coming out! I have done similar things with tables (and chairs), as you did to the kids’ table, and just a suggestion, you could always staple a layer of plastic over the top. At least then it can easily be wiped and it’s easy to pull off later on. I used to get it cut right off of the bolt at Walmart and it was really cheap…
    Thanks for sharing your space!!

  3. Great idea for the tabletop! Our only point of disagreement may be that I actually LOVE putting together IKEA furniture. My husband thinks I’m nuts and gladly steps aside.

  4. I love your table! And the colors are just stunning. Red/Aqua/White has to be my absolute favorite color combination ever!!!
Wishing you lots of great creations on your new table.

    All the best,

  5. OMG! forget about the table and drawings! speak about the Hello Kitty sewing machine! Speak speak woman! Drool….

  6. Great idea for a table covering and I love the hello kitty sewing machine (mostly because its the machine that I own)!

  7. my 9 year old daughter is so excited to see this post because she has the same machine, (she bought with her own money) and she loves to sew on it. I love the table cover idea, very cute!

  8. We have the same Hello Kitty sewing machine! I didn’t want to teach my daughter to sew on my crazy fast power machine, so we got that one. My daughter (and I) love it! It’s cute, but still a tough little machine.

I just discovered your blog and I am LOVING it! Thank you for all you share.

  9. I am a long time follower of your blog and love all of your ideas. I would like to know what type of paint you used on the table and chairs? Does it wipe clean very easily? My mom bought us this same set a few years ago but painted it with some type of terrible paint that stays a bit sticky and does not come clean. I am considering sanding it all down and re-painting then using oilcloth on the top.

    Any tips would be great.

    Thanks,
    Colleen
