1, 2, 3 Sew Blog Tour

This summer we’re going on the road with the 1, 2, 3 Sew blog tour! I feel like I should print some t-shirts and camp out in a parking lot somewhere. And there should definitely be a mosh pit.

Anyway, I am honored that so many of my favorite blogs have agreed to participate in the blog tour. I’ve been reading many of these blogs for years; and some are new, but just as wonderful. This handmade community is such a powerful force and I’m grateful to these amazingly talented bloggers who will be writing about my book over the next couple of weeks. There will be free projects, interviews, book giveaways and more. The full schedule is below. Follow along with us!

Fabric Update

Here’s a quick update with some of my new favorite fabrics that are just arriving in stores.

Cloud 9 Fabrics has a beautiful Designer Series featuring some amazingly talented artists including Heather Moore, Julia Rothman and Geninne Zlatkis. Heather Moore’s collection Cut Out & Keep (pictured above) is available now, and Julia Rothman’s Miscellany (pictured below) should be shipping this month, with Geninne’s collection coming in the fall. Can’t wait to see it!

And Jessica Jones of How about Orange has another fabric collection, Outside Oslo (pictured below), which is printed on practical and sturdy home décor weight canvas. I love this versatile fabric for totes, pillows, handbags and other items that need to be a bit sturdier and more durable.

And I’m loving this adorable new I Heart collection from Rashida Coleman-Hale for Timeless Treasures shown below. If you’re in the Atlanta area, be sure to stop by Whipstitch this weekend to meet Rashida and see her new fabrics.

I’m also excited about the new collection from another local fabric designer, Melody Miller, who has designed what looks like another fabulous collection for Kokka (follow the link to see images). These should hit your local fabric store in August.

There are so many great new fabrics coming out, I couldn’t begin to include them all here. What’s your favorite fabric this summer and what have you made from it?

Show Your Stripes

I told my kids that this would be the “summer of fun”, so unfortunately for you, I think it’s the summer of me not paying much attention to my blog. But really, playing and relaxing has made some significant improvements for us this summer. Maybe one day I’ll write a post about my return to 70s era parenting techniques.

But today I thought I’d share a couple of sewing projects. I am fully on board with this stripe and chevron trend, so I made a swimsuit cover up from Anna Maria Horner’s Mixed Signals voile (below), and a skirt with a nice twill ticking stripe (above), both bought locally from Whipstitch.

I didn’t use a pattern for either, but the top of the cover-up is similar to the Liberty of London top I made a while back. It has a sash and a split at the side hem. Next time, I am adding darts because I think that would help. Part of sewing clothes for myself really needs to be about finding a flattering fit since everything can be customized. That may take years to figure out. The skirt is lined with a side zipper and apparently I couldn’t be bothered with perfection in lining up the stripes. But perfection is totally overrated.

Anyway, I also wanted to let you know about a couple of current giveaways for my book, 1, 2, 3 Sew. Naughty Secretary Club is hosting a giveaway that you can enter here through Monday and Chronicle Books has a giveaway that you can enter through Tuesday by leaving a comment on their facebook post here. I’m really excited to kick off a blog tour in a couple of weeks and I’m thrilled about all the great blogs who have agreed to be part of the tour!
