More Celebrating

Whew. We celebrated my other daughter’s birthday over the weekend, and with considerably less fanfare for my mature eight-year-old who is rebelling against her mother’s handmade ideas.

So we had a pajama party for a small group of girls and since she’s never been a fan of birthday cake, we had birthday doughnuts from Sublime Doughnuts here in Atlanta. And we’ve recently discovered that she’s allergic to just about everything, so this was her last weekend of eating doughnuts (and a long list of other things). Anyway, I’ll try not to bore you with our new diet because as far as I can tell, diet is as sensitive a topic as religion and politics. The less said, the better.

And this is Wilbur. We  decided that our daughter was old enough for her own pet (aside from our family cat), so after some research we settled on a guinea pig. I have mixed feelings about pets sometimes, but this guy’s pretty cute and fairly low-maintenance. However, if you are thinking of getting one, you should know that after this photo was taken, he pooped on the bed, then proceeded to gnaw at my camera strap. Sometimes I wonder why we continue to make life more complicated rather than the reverse, but oh well.

  1. There are more and more options out there for those with food allergies these days! I hope she is able to find foods she loves. Happy birthday!

  2. Wilbur is pretty cute. I know what you mean about the diet thing. I often wonder if anything/everything we’re eating is messing us up. I’m starting to think it’s all in my head, but what if it isn’t? Hopefully I’m not killing anyone!

  3. awww..wilbur is so cute! we gave my daughter a guinea pig for her 8th b-day as well. a year later, rhino is more my pet…lol but she is cute…smelly at times…but cute nonetheless 🙂 have fun w/ your new addition!

  4. happy birthday to your big girl and happy birth day to you, mama! you can tell her that your 34 year old blog reader would be in absolute heaven if you threw a party for me!! 😉 i know my daughter will get to that stage, too. she is nearly seven and loving it still but i’m sure my days are numbered!

  5. Happy 8th birthday to your girl! Sorry to hear about the allergies and dietary changes. Does not sound fun, at all. The birthday party, however, sounds like a grand time. You can have all the guinea pigs, though.

I fell in love with Sublime at ICE Holiday Market. May have to make a trip over there this week with Miss L, in fact.

  6. Wibur is very cute, especially so because he lives at your house:) My daughter just turned 9 has a long list of food ‘sensitivities’. For treats I use the book called Baby Cakes. I’ve had pretty good success with it.

  7. What a cute Guinea pig! I love his name!! you think your guinea pig is bad about chewing on things, my cat has chewed up my crocs! Yes a cat!! I hope you daughter had a wonderful birthday and has many more!

  8. Oh that sounds like a great idea! Doughnuts instead of a cake,I’m all over that.Happy birthday to her.One of my daughters frowned over my do it yourself skills but now she’s on her own and has the crafty bug too.Funny how that happens.

  9. This was the year of our first pet too. For three years, (yes, THREE YEARS!) my son has been asking for a hamster. It’s been an adventure. I hope you enjoy yours.

  10. Aw, I’m sorry to hear about her allergies! If you guys need any help, finding alternative eats, I might be able to point you to some resources.

That guinea pig is SO CUTE!!! I had one in college, and he was a great friend. Their squeaking is the best!

  11. He is very sweet though, with his thoughtful little whiskers! Love the doughnuts, too…sorry about the food allergies…

  12. Aw, Wilbur! So cute. Guinea pigs are such fun. Although the racket in the middle of the night maybe not so much. Mine quickly found a home somewhere other than my room. 🙂

Good luck with the diet thing. Our best friends have a daughter with 4 of the 5 (or is it 5 of the 6) major allergies. It’s so tough. And you’re right – people are so critical and judgmental and opinionated it’s ridiculous. Do what’s best for your daughter and your family. No one else should get an opinion (well, except maybe her doc). Sending wishes for as easy a transition as possible. At least in this day and age you have plenty of resources for alternative recipes on the internet!

  13. wilbur is totally cute, but watch out for the addicting behavior of pet collections…. where you buy all the newest ones and then are suddendly overwhelmed at how they out number you! lol

  14. Happy birthday!! Yes I don’t know about over there but the UK has loads of alternatives for allergies (my little girl is allergic to milk) and after a while it becomes 2nd nature and not too hard. Hope they pin point what it is for her…

  15. Was just checking to see if you’d posted a Top DIY Tutorials of…(I’ve linked back to them on every blog I’ve written), but instead found this adorable post about very special letter-shaped doughnuts and little furry presents. In re your last statement, I think those of us who are really living like things a little messy.

  16. I had a guinea pig for my eighth birthday too! They make a fabulous first pet. Mine was called Podge and he became the father of a large dynasty… obviously we got a lady to keep him company soon after!

  17. Wilbur looks ideal to me. I hope you make a t-shirt featuring him. And I’m so sorry about the food allergies. Clif has a long list of mild food allergies. He avoids some (lima beans) and just eats others (chicken). It’s no fun.

  18. If it’s any consolation, we felt the same way about our rabbit (he poops every where and chews everything) and I kept wondering why I added yet another thing to my life that comes with a daily to-do list, but now we love our little guy almost as much as we love our dogs (which is a lot). Wilbur will become part of the family soon, and hopefully he can be potty trained : )

  19. I had a guinea pig when I was young. I loved it dearly; she was very special. Guinea pigs have the advantage of being very docile and easy to handle. Just make sure you put him down on an old blanket or sheet and then you don’t really have to worry about the occasion mess. And even though it taste tested your camera strap, I don’t think they chew as much as other pets. He’s ever so handsome!

  20. I am in love with Wilbur (and the doughnuts–wowza). I hope the birthday girl had lots of fun that continued through the holidays!
