Hello there.

peonies

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. Just popping in to say “Hi.”

I’m busy trying to manage my time as it seems I’m transitioning from a stay-at-home mom to a work-from-home mom as I’m writing this book. It’s tricky business. I feel like I’ve landed in the middle of the Mommy Wars. I have now experienced that mixture of guilt and relief when I drop my kids off at school. I’ve always felt that it’s essential for mothers to have something of their own — whether it’s a paid job, a volunteer job or a hobby (like sewing!). But I’ve never understood the need to fight about stay-at-home parenting versus working parenting — there’s no right way, in my opinion. It’s different for every family and we live in a complicated world. Inevitably we all screw it up at some point, don’t we?

And I have lots of pretty flowers around because my friend Laura is taking photos for the book in my turned-upside-down house. But you’ll have to wait until Spring 2011 to see these peonies again.

  1. First, I can’t wait for the book!

Second, I know the pull oh so well. Most of the first decade of this century was spent with me constantly feeling guilty for not doing enough for my kids, or my job, or my house, or Clif. I think it was almost harder being at home because people expected me to keep up with more. I know it is hard, but you will have a wonderful project completed in the end. Your daughters will be proud of you, too! Keep it up.

  2. Good luck with the book writing.

(I’ve never understood the need to fight about any parenting issues. It took me a while to find some other mums who weren’t militant about some topic or other, though).

  3. the common thread in motherhood is guilt – don’t let it get you down, you need something for yourself!
i love your blog and still check it every day to see if you have a little nugget for us bloggers 🙂
    *hugs*

  4. Well put! I’ve never understood that either. I think we should all just take pride in whatever choices we make that work best for our families. And give each other support (sometimes rousing applause, sometimes a hug and a glass of wine) along the way.

Rousing applause to you for your new book!

  5. Congrats and good luck on the book! I agree with the mommy wars thing, whatever works for you is what I always say. I don’t understand the judgment moms can place on one another. This is such a tough job and we need to stick together and support one another!

  6. well said, I/we all feel the same, and you are so right there is no right or wrong…which means we aren’t screwing up it’s the way it is suppose to be!

  7. there’s nothing like Mummy Guilt.
after 12 months back at part time work I still have attacks of the guilts, but I firmly believe that every Mummy needs time out, whatever form that comes in.

  8. congrats on your book. i hope there will be some previews before the book comes out.
all the best and keep creating!!

  9. it is a bit of a quandry isn’t it? glad we can all make our own decisions and that we have scissors and thread to help us out. 🙂 thanks for sharing the thoughts.
