Lion Monster

This didn’t quite turned out as I imagined, but here it is anyway.  I asked my five-year-old to draw something for me to make into a stuffed animal for her birthday.  She quickly drew this “lion monster” and I used felted sweater, fabric scraps and felt to put it together.

Sewing with felted sweaters was difficult for me and I found it hard to avoid this lumpy look without overstuffing it.  I think it would be helpful to use iron-on stabilizer when working with sweaters.  I cropped this photo intentionally because my construction on the bottom is terrible!  It helps me to think of my awful hand sewing as folksy and quaint, rather than messy and uneven.  Whatever works.

  1. I like it too! My sewing hand has always been a little folksy. I like to call it quaint! I have decided to use the drawings to toy idea myself this Christmas for the little ones.

    Love your site!

  2. it always seems sooo easy doesn’t it. they are a bit surprising when you get going. i bet she still loves it though and doesn’t worry about the folksy stitching.

  3. I agree with the rest of those who have already commented already. This is adorable. I love the eyes, the mane, and the monster mouth. You did a great job. And it looks just like the picture. I’m sure your daughter loved it.

  4. Just found your site today (from a link to your cape tutorial on ikatbag) and am already inspired with all sorts of projects. Figured I’d stop and comment on this one because I just did a similar thing for the first time, making a bunny that my Kindergartener drew.

Love the colors you used. Your lion monster turned out so cute. Great job!
