Making and Organizing

Well, I made some progress on my sewing room. I folded fabric on some existing shelves using chipboard as you can see on the left here. I think the vertical filing will work out much better than my previous piles, but it’s the putting things back in their proper place that’s the real problem, isn’t it? When I had a desk job, I always cleaned and organized papers on Friday afternoons before I went home, but being at home all the time, my sewing room is always disorganized. In addition to the existing shelves, I bought a bookshelf from IKEA for notions, boxes and baskets, and hung a pegboard. Then I painted our old CD shelf (above, right) for fat quarters and half yards. Now my husband has to go through all his CDs that I boxed up. Out with the old.

But of course before I finished organizing, I’ve started sewing again. Making a baby quilt, possibly two of them.

And to make you feel better if you haven’t been organized lately, here’s the basket of fabric bits yet to be folded and put away.

Next, I need to add a design wall and figure out a nice way to store an ironing board. Do you quilters out there have any ideas for a design wall that looks good? I was thinking of just wrapping some white flannel around a large frame and hanging it on the wall, but that still doesn’t sound so great. I’d love to hear your ideas.

My Sewing Room

I’m starting to outgrow my space again. With plans to get another machine and a big project coming up, I need to get organized. In the past, I was keeping all my fabric down the hall in a separate closet, but it really needs to be in front of me. Now I have a lot of jumbled piles on various shelving. At some point, I need to face the fact that my fabric will not be in neat little stacks, so maybe storage with doors? The two photos above left show what the room looked like before I wrote 1, 2, 3 Sew. I had just painted and gotten it all organized for the Craft Spaces feature over on CRAFT. And then on the right is a photo taken last spring, with a quilt top draped on the mantel. And what to do with the mantel, which totally impedes my space.

Now I’ve asked you folks over on Twitter for some storage advice and this seems to be a pretty hot topic! So, let’s hear some more ideas. What is your best advice for getting organized?

Mass Edit Mode

We’re cleaning out around the house and there is just too much STUFF (reminds me of Georgie Carlin’s stuff routine). My husband took the kids to see WALL-E the other day and I think it scared him a bit. The fact that we are filling up our planet and our bodies to overflow is a pretty frightening thought. Ironically, they were giving out cheap-o plastic watches as promotional items for this movie. It is Disney, after all. It has occurred to me more than once that handmade might be better in some respects, but I am buying lots of fabric and supplies, likely made in an environmentally unfriendly way (in China). Oops, sorry to be a downer. So I’m going to start buying less, making more things myself and I’m finally going to start composting.

While we’re sorting and organizing, we have compiled a large box of kids’ artwork and hate to keep it in a closet.

Saw this idea on Design Mom last month and have been thinking about doing it. You can send your child’s artwork (25-112 pieces) away to turn it into a beautiful custom piece like this. They will be scanned and printed on archival paper. So you don’t have to decide which works to display. The Jan Eleni Collage is available from Love. Of course I would try this project myself in some form, but after I scan in the artwork I still think I won’t be able to put it in the recycling bin! So I’d still have a box of artwork, but oh well.

Sewing Room Clean-Up

I am a slob. I hate to post this photo, but I know how it makes people feel good to see the mess of others! Hope you’re feeling better about your own mess.

I did some cleaning out and re-organizing this week. It really was getting quite unmanageable. I decided to stop using plastic containers for my fabric because it just becomes a jumbled mess. We’ll see how this works. I also plan to make some fabric panels for these shelves because I don’t like to look at clutter, though I do like to make it.  We’ll see if I can actually get some sewing done soon.
