Easter isn’t a big holiday around our house (don’t worry, I’m not going to start a conversation about religion). But my older daughter seems particularly excited about it this year, so we hauled out the box of Easter decorations that we used when I was a kid. How sweet are these? And also sad with those missing ears. If you like this kind of thing, The Wooden Wagon has some really sweet decorations.
When I was a kid, my mother would get a branch from the yard every spring, spray it white and put it in a pot to make an Easter tree. We hung sweet little eggs and wooden decorations on it. These little birds in the front still have some gummy stuff on them from where my mother would affix them to a branch. Really sweet. I may try to do it this year with my kids. My mom also made a giant egg-shaped cake surrounded by green sprinkles and jelly beans, which we loved of course. This year, I think I’m going to try Bakerella’s Easter egg cake pops (less elaborate, just with sprinkles, I think). And I think that’s a baking project that needs to be done without little hands helping. So we’ll see how that goes.
Oh my sweetness, these are so adorable! Thanks for sharing and inspiring me to get out that Easter box! 🙂 Cheers!
I guess I better follow suit and make a trip to the attic. The year feels like it’s on fast forward. I barely but away the Valentine’s stuff!
We did the same things when we were kids: the tree branch and the Easter cake. We usually made a bunny out of 2 8in cakes; you cut out 2 ears and are left with a bowtie :). My sister and I would decorate it with WAY too much stuff but it was fun!
Have you made cake pops before? I’d love to hear your take on the process. I made them one time, and I’m pretty sure that will be the last time I ever make them.
Oh, and a little note on Easter. I LOVE the holiday thanks to my Greek grandfather. The Greek Orthodox folks really know how to celebrate the holiday the right way.
Ah, so retro! They remind me of the little wooden Christmas ornaments that have been part of the family collection of tree decorations for as long as I can remember. These are charming!
Lovely to keep traditions alive
They are just lovely and because they have their own story makes them extra special !
Your childhood decorations are so cute! I have been thinking I need to get out our decorations (some Ukrainian eggs I decorated a number of years ago). And I will also be interested to hear what you think of the cake pops… I’ve never made them, I’m suspicious of the candy melts I guess.
I’ve seen those easter trees before, they can be elegant or whimsical. Love that about such a simple decoration.
We would make the rabbit cake, too. And cover it with coconut for fur and different candies for the face. Easter is always so busy at our house that I don’t know if I’ve ever really decorated for it. Though I do like to make hot cross buns the week before.
The cake balls are lots of fun to make. Really easy, roll and do put them in the freezer to firm up.
The thing I love most about Easter decorations is their simple beauty. Just like you said, a lovelly Easter tree and a few ornamental eggs and simple wooden decorations is all you need to bring the true Easter atmosphere alive. Together with the fresh spring breeze and blooming trees and flowers one feels like in a fairytale :-).
