This is one candy tree that I wouldn’t be tempted to eat. I find gumdrops totally unappealing, but once they’ve been glued with a hot glue gun onto styrofoam, they are even less so. Candy is a theme around here right now as we are planning for my daughter’s Willy Wonka birthday party. (Is it a good idea to invite an entire class of first graders to your house and give them a bunch of candy?)
Anyway, I looked at a few tutorials, but decided to go with the trusty glue gun after reading this one. I found gumdrops to be scarce and the ones I found weren’t very pretty. And man, these things are like sandpaper on your hands. But I made two of these trees, using two big tubs of gumdrops for each tree (about 18″ tall). Hopefully I can just spray these down with polyurethane and store them in an airtight container to use again, but that sort of grosses me out. We’ll see.
Nicely done. We do a green and red gumdrop tree and use toothpicks, so they can be eaten off the tree (minus the toothpicks, of course). Papa gets one for X-mas every year! Funny, we haven’t been able to find gumdrops very readily either…
Krylon’s matte sealer works great…
That is SO cute – I can’t even stand it! Great job!!
Let us know how the spray sealer works out. I’m curious to know if it’ll hold up. I’m also curious to know if the bugs will stay away from it :o)
man, just looking at this makes me tired. it also makes me want to run out and get the stuff and make one, which makes me more tired.
great job, it is super cute!
I love the tree. I would make one of my own but after seeing what the little ones did to the ginger bread house I don’t dare.
OH I love it. I think I would attach the gumdrops with royal icing so that if the little ones what a piece they can pull it off and eat it.
This looks so great! We covered small styrofoam balls with gumdrops using the toothpick method. My fingers were raw from all the sugar/toothpicks. The finished orbs ended up being SO heavy but they were very pretty hung with a big red satin bow. I hear you on not being tempted to eat the gumdrops. Blech.
Its very cute! But I’m with you gum drops give me the ick. I did make a great gum drop wreath back in my CampFire Girl days I don’t remember it lasting to the next year.
Sadly.. I would be tempted to pick at it and eat it.. good job! That must have taken a lot of patience!
