Halloween Ribbon Wreath

Our friend Sarah gave me a couple of spools of this black grosgrain ribbon, presenting me with a challenge.  So here is this quick and easy Halloween wreath.  Since it takes a lot of ribbon, try buying in bulk online rather than at the craft stores.  I really like this site for ribbons and trims.

Supplies:

  • 12″ foam wreath form
  • 24 yards 1 1/4″ black grosgrain ribbon (or less if using a wider ribbon)
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Steps:

  1. Cut 45-50 16″ pieces of ribbon.
  2. Tie one strand of ribbon in a knot around the wreath.  I used a “messy knot” — right over left, then right over left again, pulling in the opposite direction.  It doesn’t really matter how you do it as long as you are consistent all the way around.  Repeat with the knots, pushing them close together, until you fill the wreath.
  3. Cut one long piece of ribbon (48″) and tie one end to form a knot.  Leave a long loop for hanging and tie another knot onto the wreath.
  4. Trim any frayed or long ends.

  1. So my mother and I saw this last year, my mom bought the ribbon online and then proceeded to be ridiculously busy with work and her masters. We eventually got around to it this weekend and this is the result: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kimstitch/5252262908/in/photostream/ We did two darker knots and one light. We did the ends angled and a bit longer than yours, and I love how it kinda looks like holly with the points.

    We are going to be doing another one light/light/dark with the leftover ribbon. Thanks for the inspiration!

  6. @Terri – One way to keep the ends from fraying is to burn them (lightly). Would probably be take a while with all of these ends, but it would work!

  13. To save on ribbon, use a thick wire hoop or old emroidery hoop instead of a foam wreath form. Then you can use shorter amounts of ribbon since it doesn’t have to wrap around a larger form 🙂 Definitely going to make this for our front door for the holiday season… now to decide on the right color(s)… burgundy, gold, silver, blue, red, green, oh the choices!

  14. I checked out the MJ site… it has a lot of great stuff, just not the best price for GG ribbon. Try Alwaysunderpay.com or RibbonRetreat.com if you are wanting a great wholesale price for bulk ribbon. I can’t imagine spending almost $4 for a yard of ribbon and almost $100 for only 33 yards. Alwaysunderpay has 50 yard spools for $10!

  19. Hi! Can you explain how you did the long ribbon for hanging with a bit more detail? You say tie one end to form a knot…by itself or on the wreath form? I’m a little confused. Thanks!

  20. While this is a gorgeous wreath, the 16″ is too small! I cut 45-16″ lengths of expensive black grosgrain ribbon for the form which you recommended, only to find out that these pieces are way too small to make a two-knot bow, I wasted a lot of money and have to buy another spool of ribbon b/c I promised two wreaths. When I discovered my mistake, I re-measured and found that 18″ is what is needed, maybe 19″.
